Walter Brueggemann will trace the trajectories of accumulated food and share food references through the Bible, stretching from manna to Eucharist amid many “storehouses.” According to Brueggemann "food is an image in the Bible for all the levers of life and death...power, control, wealth. I think it now takes much moral courage to "call out" the dominant system of food (leverage) as a system of greed, anxiety, and violence; it takes even more moral courage to line out, in talk and in walk, an alternative system of food (leverage) in terms of generosity and justice. I cannot think of any issue that is so urgent in its evocation of moral courage as that.”

Change is inevitable, in fact “Change Happens”, but change can be initiated for the purpose of achieving a goal or mission. Instead of planning and/or instigating change, most often we react to change. We aren’t “in front” of change, and rarely are we proactive, using the strategies and tools of planned change that are available to us. Created, intentional change is a tool for the ministry of all the baptized, indeed, for the ecumenical religious community. However, instigating change is not for the faint of heart nor the uninformed. At the heart of proactive change is courage. It is within the context of courage that we choose to act, both individually and communally. Without courage, change still happens, but we are reactive in its wake. Courageous change is marked by the characteristics of planning, intentionality and creativity. The address will explore:
+ Tapping moral capital
+ Analysis of the context for proactive change & why the people of God need to know this
+ The inhibiting and enabling factors of courage
+ Moral courage and the lost art of speaking up
+ Specific methodologies for proactive courageous change
+ It’s own form of rocket science
